Flight Path for Success
This has been our Puppy Academy foundation program for many years. This is a 6-week program.
It is based on the AKC STAR Puppy Program.
To raise a puppy that is well mannered in your home and outside your home we recommend this prescription (a program that allows success with your puppy to occur).
Understand the emotion behind your puppy’s behavior. Puppies go potty where they feel comfortable and typically bark to get attention or to communicate. A puppy that goes outside and begins barking at everything may be because of fear, frustration or they enjoy barking. First thing to understand is that barking, chewing, jumping are ways of communication by your puppy. We need to find what motivates your puppy to do almost anything.
Remember each puppy is bred to have traits that are passed down to them, barking, sniffing, biting, jumping and mixed breed puppies can have unique combinations of traits. These are all normal puppy behaviors. This is where Liz brings in her Family Dog Mediation training. Helping you to understand the L.E.G.S. of your puppy: Learning, Environment, Genetics and Self. If one “leg” is missing, then your puppy is likely to have some struggles. It is not all nature or nurture, but a combination of the four “legs”.
Management strategies for your personal home so that you can immediately stop and prevent unwanted habits to form. With management tools in place, you will understand your puppy better, and begin to predict your puppy’s actions and understand what to do.
Next step is to teach your puppy to have a neutral or positive experience with the world you live in.
Build a solid vocabulary your puppy understands.
The program consists of:
- 4 in-person sessions (45-minutes each session) held at the CTS Training Center in Brookings. These sessions are individually tailored for you and your puppy and will be designed to meet your goals and the needs of your puppy. The sessions are held during Weeks 1, 2, 4 and 6.
- Life-time access to the online Puppy Academy; you receive the benefit of any updates/additions to the resources.
- Support to include session follow-ups with homework, feedback on videos, answering questions either via email or a support call.
- Socialization with humans and other puppies/dogs.
Bonuses!
- 2 extra 45-minute sessions that can be booked after completion of the original 4 sessions and at any time before your puppy reaches 12 months of age. This makes your puppy eligible for the AKC STAR Puppy Testing.
