MY APPROACH AND PHILOSOPHY
✔ Get great manners from your dog using training methods that are grounded in canine behavioral science, humane, effective, and easy to incorporate in your everyday life.
✔ With a personalized approach to training and behavioral needs, we will work together to develop a success path that leads to a great family companion.
✔ This success path will use positive reinforcement, choice- and play-based training to achieve the goals you set. In addition to training, we will assess the issues your dog is struggling with to devise behavior and/or management plans to aid in a successful outcome.
✔ Positive reinforcement is reinforcing your dog for what you want through the use of treats, toy, or play. This keeps the training fun for both you and your dog as well strengthening the bond between you. The increase in attention and focus will give you a dog that you can be proud of.
Positive is not permissive and we will work together to help set structure and boundaries for your dog in addition to training. This puts expectations on your dog that are clear and fair resulting in a happier home.
✔ If behavioral issues are involved, a team approach will be taken with a certified dog behavior consultant, a veterinary behaviorist, and your regular veterinarian if needed.
Besides training my own dogs and those of other people, I love to compete in dog sports to assess the training of myself and my dogs. I have competed and titled (lower to upper level) dogs in agility (UKC, NADAC, AKC, USDAA), rally obedience (AKC), obedience (AKC), conformation (AKC), herding (AKC), scent work (AKC), nose work (NACSW), and Barn Hunt (BHA).
Jonesy, one of my current Border Collies, is a retired a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International. Majik my Golden Retriever and Tux my first Border Collie (both waiting at the Rainbow bridge) were TDI certified therapy dogs.
I am a 10+ year member of the South Dakota 4H Dog Project Advisory Committee and have judged at both the county and state levels. I chair the agility sub-committee which is responsible for ensuring that agility remains a safe and fun learning experience for 4Hers and their dogs.
I also volunteer as a service dog trainer for Big Paws Canine Foundation in Sioux Falls, SD which provides service dogs and training for veterans and former first responders.
